The Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival is one of the most popular festivals in Africa and will be taking place this year on March 4th-7th, 2020, in Argungu town, Kebbi State of Nigeria. The annual festival started initially as a religious festival prior to the time of Surame Gungu of Kebbi Kingdom. Presently, it is a four-day event that draws more than 30.000 fisherman and villagers to participate in a fishing competition. The fishing contest takes place in the waters of the river Mata Fada, using nets and traditional gourds made with calabashes to catch fish. The fisherman who catches the biggest fish usually wins a huge amount of money. The festival also includes other cultural events such as the four major rituals that are observed during the Argungu International Fishing Festival:

1. The Gyaran Ruwa- refers to the basic rituals of purification of water
2. The Fashin Ruwa - a national event that signifies the waters for fishing, accompanied by displays of music, dance, acrobatics & wrestling
3. The Gyaran Gari - purifying the town to get rid of evil spirits
4. The Shan Kabewa and Fura - testing the pumpkin porridge

The first two ceremonies (Gyaran Ruwa and Fashin Ruwa) relate to water and have direct bearing on fishing while the other two Ceremonies are for land propitiations. As of today, only the Fashin Ruwa ritual takes place. The other 3 were abolished due to the Islamic culture in the area.
